Mindful Flow Series: Yoga for Anxiety

We’re all prone to anxiety—it’s a normal and protective emotion. But when it overtakes us, we live in our [often untrue] thoughts, the body becomes dysregulated, and we get disconnected from life.

Blending ancient wisdom with modern therapy practices, this workshop is designed to help you cope with stress and anxiety. Drawing from Ayurveda, we’ll move through breathwork, yoga postures, and mindfulness practices. Any level of yoga experience is welcome.

What to expect:
🪷 Grounding Yoga Pranayama (breathwork) & Asana (postures) – to regulate the nervous system and reduce restless energy
🌀 Meditation for the Overthinking Mind –to quiet racing thoughts, while learning cognitive defusion, a technique to not get lost in our mind’s narratives.
❇️ Mindfulness of Sound & Sound Bath – immersing in healing vibrations to release tension, practice sound as an anchor, and invite deep relaxation.

Wear comfortable clothes and arrive a few minutes early to set up. Yoga mats are available, but feel free to bring your own. Optional: a journal and pen.

This workshop is part of the Mindful Flow Series, a collection of workshops weaving together Eastern healing traditions and Western psychotherapy to increase resilience and cultivate ease. In each workshop, you’ll also walk away with a few ideas and mind-body tools to bring into daily life to nurture your well-being. Facilitated by Nira, Licensed Psychotherapist & Yoga/Meditation instructor

Somatic Movement Workshop with Stephanie Parker

Nia is a low-impact, low-pressure movement practice rooted in ancient forms of energetic healing and release including Tai Chi, Yoga, and African dance. Whether you’re an experienced mover or beginner, or need some modifications, this somatically attuned workshop is for you. With Nia, we move at the speed of the nervous system, devoting ample time to warm-up, cool-down & stretching. We also learn somatic nervous system regulation techniques you can take home to add to your own practice. Nia with Stephanie will leave you feeling refreshed, relaxed, and mentally clear. Stephanie Parker (she/her) is a Black Queer somatic practitioner and licensed Nia instructor based in Oakland, California. She is a graduate of Stanford University (B.A., M.A.), and worked at Google for 9 years before being called to the path of ancestral healing. Stephanie creates safe, affirming, sacred, decolonial spaces, guiding in a nonhierarchical way that allows collective wisdom to emerge from the group. Stephanie's journey as a healer began with her own body’s divine act of refusal in the form of severe upper body-wide nerve pain, a condition that led her to step away from both her social justice organizing work and decade-long career in the tech industry. Stephanie’s search for relief led her to her first Nia Dance class, where she experienced the physical release of trapped emotions, loving intergenerational community, and the embodied sensation of feeling both freedom and safety at the same time. It was this spirit-led encounter that served as a catalyst for her decision to walk in her purpose. You can learn more about Stephanie and her offerings on her website, and on Instagram at @catchlight27.

What Should We Solve, Together? A Civic Gathering at Groundfloor on What Matters Most

A Civic Gathering at Groundfloor on What Matters Most

Oakland is full of wisdom — and people ready to act. What’s missing is a space to listen deeply, identify the problems that matter most, and collaborate across lines to solve them.

This gathering is the first step in a broader community-led civic process. Together, we’ll:
• Share what really matters to you, as an Oaklander
• Explore what’s possible across neighborhoods, backgrounds, and sectors
• Experience and experiment with inclusive practices and tools
(like this interactive Pol.is survey > https://bit.ly/OaklandCivicSolutions2025)
• Discover opportunities to meet with community members, leaders, media, and policymakers.

Facilitated by a local team of community organizers and civic innovators, we invite you to come and be heard. This is not a listening session— come ready to build something together.

Whether you’re a resident, activist, small biz owner, journalist, policymaker, or just someone who cares — your voice belongs here.

We aim to create a welcoming and transformative space where people feel heard, discover shared priorities, and want to build toward solutions together. Join us at the beginning — your voice shapes this ongoing experiment in real democracy for the East Bay.

==
Event hosted by Real Democracy & East Bay Civic Hub. Let’s find out what matters, and build from the ground floor.

Event is free and open to all local attendees. You don’t do not need to be a member of Groundfloor to attend, and welcome you as a guest.

Snacks to be provided.

Our intent is to create a free, inclusive, and friendly space for connection and community based on ideas, in an environment that prioritizes listening and openness to a wide range of perspectives.

How does it work?
We choose a topic, share optional resources (video/articles/podcasts, etc.) and discussion questions in advance to establish a shared context, and then have a lightly moderated discussion along with potluck-style drinks and snacks. Defeat Your Arch Nemesis - How To Get Out Of Your Own Way

“The only thing in your way is you.” You’ve probably heard that saying, but thought to yourself “Okay, but how?"

Leadership Coach Michael Tertes starts by calling the part of us that’s in our way our Arch Nemesis a.k.a. saboteur, gremlin, head bully, negative mind chatter etc. When our Arch Nemesis gets to run the show it can influence every aspect of our lives. It eats at our confidence, keeps us stuck, frustrated and often confused. Bottom line, it impacts our ability to fully express ourselves, find fulfillment and have the impact we’re here to have.

During this participatory and powerful workshop Michael will teach you how to “get out of your own way” by identifying the specific, sneaky strategies and tactics your Arch Nemesis uses against you. From there, you'll learn Michael’s five most powerful moves to defeat your Arch Nemesis; allowing you to more freely, powerfully and consistently move towards the life, career or relationships you truly desire.

We’ll end with a community reflection and casual social gathering.

Interpersonal Club

Interpersonal Club is a space for members to explore, inquire, practice and deepen in understanding around the many types of relationships and connections in our lives. Through the exploration of interpersonal neurobiology, communication skills, relational resonance and coherence, co-regulation, empathy, emotional attunement, attachment, collective consciousness and more, we will grow our connections in real time and deepen our capacities for authentic and embodied relationships with our friends, partners, families, children, collaborators, and communities.

*A note about our club structure: Rather than centering consumption of content or replication of hierarchical group power structures, we will tend to center group process in Interpersonal Club, meaning that we will stay with the trouble of working/playing/exploring through any sticky or murky places that may come up as we learn to be in deeper community together.

DISCLAIMER: Interpersonal Club and its events and offerings are for enrichment only and are not a substitute for therapy, counseling, or mental health support groups.

About Jackie: Jackie is an Integrative Family and Relational Coach and is a relationally focused Occupational Therapist. She enjoys translating and applying macrocosmic concepts and principles to support client's lived experiences and embodied wisdom, all while remaining grounded in context and interdependence. Jackie works with people of all ages, guided by the vast and rich fields of interpersonal neurobiology, autonomic physiology, emergent strategy, sensory integration, panpsychism, dynamic systems theory, quantum theory, anthropology, and her boundless seeking heart.

Business Club (Connect + Collab)

Business Club is a monthly networking and peer mentoring opportunity for all professionals and creatives to connect, exchange ideas, and problem solve over their morning cuppa. The meetings are facilitated by Sophie Davies to ensure everyone has equal time to introduce themselves and ask for what they need. How it works: After introductions the group breaks out into smaller groups to allow everyone to share “an ask” through peer mentoring with your makeshift advisory board. “Your ask” can be a specific idea that you need feedback on or a challenge you need help with. This work-related inclusive club is for everyone who understands that while we tend to work individually, we regularly encounter the same work challenges and believe that collectively we are stronger when we support each other and figure things out together. These gatherings are limited to 20 people, so please commit to staying for the duration of the session.

Please come having read the books (or beware that there will be spoilers), and we look forward to seeing you then!

Book Club: Demon Copperhead

September's book club discussion will be Demon Copperhead.

Winner of the Pulitzer Prize, Barbara Kingsolver's book is a brilliant novel that enthralls, compels, and captures the heart as it evokes a young hero’s unforgettable journey to maturity.

Set in the mountains of southern Appalachia, Demon Copperhead is the story of a boy born to a teenaged single mother in a single-wide trailer, with no assets beyond his dead father’s good looks and copper-colored hair, a caustic wit, and a fierce talent for survival. Relayed in his own unsparing voice, Demon braves the modern perils of foster care, child labor, derelict schools, athletic success, addiction, disastrous loves, and crushing losses. Through all of it, he reckons with his own invisibility in a popular culture where even the superheroes have abandoned rural people in favor of cities.

Many generations ago, Charles Dickens wrote David Copperfield from his experience as a survivor of institutional poverty and its damages to children in his society. Those problems have yet to be solved in ours. Dickens is not a prerequisite for readers of this novel, but he provided its inspiration. In transposing a Victorian epic novel to the contemporary American South, Barbara Kingsolver enlists Dickens’ anger and compassion, and above all, his faith in the transformative powers of a good story. Demon Copperhead speaks for a new generation of lost boys, and all those born into beautiful, cursed places they can’t imagine leaving behind.

*********
As usual, come prepared to talk about the book. Ideally, it would be good to finish it, but we won't kick you out if you just want to come and hang with us and talk about topics from the book, like:

- Systemic poverty and class barriers
- Addiction and the opioid crisis
- Resilience and human dignity
